Nimbin St Nursery

26 March 2020

We survived the relocation, the smoke, the fires, the heatwaves, and the hailstorm of 2019/2020, and now we find ourselves under siege yet again with the mind-bending reality of a global pandemic. The isolation thus far isn't so hard for us to bear, as we have relatively socially isolated lives in Canberra thus far anyway, but there are difficulties in keeping 3 children at home and content, whilst allowing for a reasonable work environment for Leighton down the short hall.

Until last Friday Huon was attending school, but with a possible visit from Nana and WongaPa and ever increasing number of cases, we decided to stop sending the kids to school/preschool. Once we made that decision it put me much more at ease, rather than constantly questioning the safety of doing so and the government's rational for keeping schools open. As it so happened, ACT schools were effectively closed on the Tuesday due to "pupil free" days until the Easter holidays, so it really made our decision much easier.

Since Monday I have been running Nimbin St Nursery, with varying degrees of success. I have a schedule, that I'm failing to adhere to, however that is ok, as it is mostly about getting through the day sane and feeling we have purpose. Huon has surprisingly been mostly compliant, and seems to want to undertake the school work. Today (Queen Bea's birthday) I felt overwhelmed by a messy house, wild children, a cake to decorate, lasagne to make, and 2 loads of washing, so I  decided to abandon the schedule, and after a day of doing whatever the hell he wanted  Huon decided at the end that tomorrow we will go back to our schedule and do school work, so I think he likes the structure also.

It already feels an age ago that we were doing school drop offs/pick ups and deliberating whether it was appropriate have Huon catch the school bus on his own. The uncertainty of the situation is what gets me, and ultimately I just hope that our family and friends are all with us when this pandemic wraps up. I asked Leighton how long he thought we'd be we'd be holed up for here, and he predicts until the spring. Given we are still at the beginning of this crisis, I agree, we could potentially be here until July/August, and for older more vulnerable people it could be longer. The US situation is still continuing to unfold and we are all concerned about the potential devastation possible given the inept handling of the situation by the orange buffoon, and the coronavirus is only just gaining a foothold in Africa, which could prove catastrophic.

A few photos of the scholars at the table, exercise time riding in the green commons, beatrix checking the mail in her slippers, and the big 2 birthday girl!
